Billy Hemmingson wanders — or is it wonders?
His photographic work documents the intertwining social and colloquial narratives of forgotten towns across Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia. Drawing from his own experience of constantly relocating as a child, these long-term projects allow him to build relationships and develop an understanding of the intricate dynamics and personalities unique to each place. As the world shifts, these towns grow fewer and further between. What remains is small — and often in decline.

Born in Geraldton in the early ’90s, Billy lived in 17 different homes and six cities before the age of 18. Change became a constant motif in his life. In his early 20s, he migrated to his parents’ homeland, settling with distant relatives and forming a close bond with his grandmother. After relocating three times more, Billy currently resides in Liverpool, England. Graduating from Massey University (Wellington, New Zealand) in 2024 with first-class honours in photography.
